Review | Camille Rose Lavender Collection Demo & Review

Camille Rose Lavender Collection

If you've been following my blog and social platforms for awhile, then you probably already know that I am a huge fan of Camille Rose for my 4C hair. As a matter of fact, I recently removed most of my natural hair products leaving only this brand's complete collection on the shelves.

When I saw the snippet of the Lavender Collection on social media, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it! Camille Rose kind of reminds me of the LUSH Kitchen -- always whipping up new limited edition blends which makes everyone go nuts online when they drop.

The Lavender Collection consists of:

  • Shaken Hair Spritzer which is a leave-in refresher that helps soften and detangle the hair. It has kept my hair soft even DAYS after styling. This really needs to be permanent because there's nothing like it in the other Camille Rose collections.

  • Crush Defining Gel has been nice for my twistouts, but AMAZING for wash-and-go's on my kinky coily hair. Honestly, this product gave me the best one yet and I received several compliments 2-3 days after coiling my wash-and-go. I'll be purchasing another one of these ASAP before they sell out. No residue, no flakes, no problems.

  • White Clay Edge Custard did not leave my hair feeling nasty and packed with gel. It held down my edges except for when I sweated in the sweltering Texas heat. The crazy heat and humidity has been making use of any products extremely tough lately.

Camille Rose never fails to bless us with new products! I stopped by Sally Beauty to purchase the newly released Lavender Collection trio and I wanted to share my thoughts on the products with you all especially for my 4C subbies who appreciate and understand the texture.

While this collection is only available in select Sally Beauty stores and on their website (not Camille Rose's site), I appreciate that the products in this trio are super affordable. Nothing is over $12 in this collection! Plus, you can use Sally Beauty coupons to collect them all.

Everyday Skincare Routine with Tata Harper

Last month, I was invited to a Lunch & Learn with Tata Harper at Mirador in Dallas. I've always seen the skincare line in stores like Nordstrom and Neiman's but never got around to purchasing any of the products, so this was very exciting! Lunch with the other beauty influencers and Tata & her team was nothing short of amazing. Of course, we were sent home with several Tata Harper goodies to try and I immediately figured a routine for myself.

I've been using this routine for approximately 2 weeks now and have traveled with it to New Orleans for Essence and the New Orleans Natural Hair Expo this month. I still have other products to try out, but here is my current routine and steps:

Step 1 | Regenerating Cleanser

The Regenerating Cleanser is a cleanser and exfoliator all-in-one! This has definitely been keeping the dead skin and roughness away, but I've been alternating this one with a foaming milk cleanser because I haven't wanted to irritate my skin. I apply this to my face while wet and massage it on my skin in a circular motion before rinsing.

Step 2 | Hydrating Floral Essence

Next, I lightly mist my face with the Hydrating Floral Essence and let it air dry (no rubbing in). I honestly thought this one might trigger my allergies since it is floral, but luckily it hasn't. The scent is extremely soft and the results are refreshing. It can be used to refresh the skin throughout the day or simply as a toner.

Step 3 | Elixir Vitae

For my serum, I followed with the Elixir Vitae which has been fabulous. My favorite products to try from brands are serums because they are highly concentrated to repair the skin. While I do not have any wrinkles, the Elixir Vitae was created to tackle them. I have noticed that my pores tighten and the overall complexion and texture of my skin looks perfect. Texture is such a big deal for me especially as a beauty blogger who wears a lot of makeup.

Step 4 | Crème Riche Velvet Moisturizing Cream

A new holy grail product for me -- the Crème Riche Velvet Moisturizing Cream. I have SUPER oily skin. Even though I've learned to just embrace the way my skin is and that oiliness is actually a positive thing, I like to control it as much as I can. I mean, who wants a slick face with a full face of makeup on (or even bare-faced)?! NO THANKS.

This Velvet Moisturizing Cream leaves my skin feeling....well, VELVETY. It hasn't leave me feeling greasy, but instead, rather matte. It has been amazing before applying makeup everyday.

Review | Live Botanical Oceania Coconut + Bergamot Milk Bath

Before Indie Beauty Expo, I just about followed every brand that was exhibiting that looked even slightly interesting to me and Live Botanical was one. I'm a sucker for packaging and theirs was just so pretty!

I stopped by their booth to look at their collection of products. Particularly, I was looking for products that were different than what I already owned or don't purchase very often. My eyes set on the Oceania Coconut + Bergamot Milk Bath, so I picked up to see how it smelled. Baths are a weekly ritual for me, so I appreciate a pleasant scent. When I inhaled, I couldn't believe my nostrils! The coconut with the vanilla-y scent of Benzoin smelled almost good enough to eat -- like sweet cupcake batter or something. I even picked up a little bit of the lime in there.

Ingredients

Dehydrated Coconut Milk*, Pink Himalayan Salt, Acacia Fiber*, Tapioca Maltodextrin (from yucca root*), essential oils of Benzoin*, Bergamot* (bergaptene free), Lime* and Lavender*

*organic (From Live Botanical's website)

The ritual

From the packaging: Pour half a cup into a warm bath and soak for 20-30 minutes. Contemplate a walk on a tropical beach with the sun warming your skin.

What not to expect

  • Bubbles! This is not going to give you bubbles at all because that's not its purpose.
  • Color. It's white, so I'm not sure why this would be expected, but... *shrug*
  • This to to be soap.

What to expect

  • A sweet, uplifting scent that will make you want to take an impromptu vacation
  • A milky bath to soak in and relax
  • Oils that soften the skin and deeply moisturize

I received this jar for review purposes during the expo. I have two (maybe three) more baths left out of this jar and every last use was fabulous. Thirty minutes is all you need in this relaxing milk bath! I love to crack the blinds to let in a little bit of sun or listen to my favorite Hulu shows with the lights dimmed.

I will absolutely be purchasing a jar after this one is gone. It's only $22, so about the same as any other product like this from a non-indie brand. In other words, it's very affordable. I'm hoping the owner makes more Milk Bath blends in the future because I would certainly try them. But the best part? There's a Body Cream that pairs with this Milk Bath, too!

Have y'all tried anything from Live Botanical? They're currently offering 25% off with the code 'YAYSPRING' until 5/29/2017 and free shipping is available for US orders of $30 or more. International shipping is also available for a flat rate of $12.

Review | Aveda Pramasana Purifying Scalp Cleanser + Protective Concentrate

As a black girl with natural hair, I don't tend to switch up the products I use very often. I've found an entire line of products that work well for my kinky, coily and semi-frizzy 4C hair, and I stick with it for the most part. However, after my visit to the Aveda Experience Center at NorthPark Center in January, they sent me home with the Invati Exfoliating Shampoo. At first, I wasn't sure if I wanted to use it because I've fallen in love with Camille Rose's Sweet Ginger Cleansing Rinse, but I decided to only apply it to my scalp...and I loved it.

When Aveda sent their new Pramasana Purifying Scalp Cleanser and Protective Scalp Concentrate, I was super eager to try them out on my next wash day. I felt so clean and comfortable afterwards. No leftover itching, flakes or anything! Essentially, they both do the same thing when used on the scalp...but I've broken down some of the differences between Invati and Pramasana below:

Pramasana Scalp Cleanser

  •  Convenience of a nozzle to target scalp for easy shower use
  •  Created specifically to cleanse the scalp
  • Contains cleansing agents from babassu, seaweed extract, lactobacillus, and tamanu oil.
  •  Will need a shampoo to follow with to cleanse the hair/strands
  • One size: $35 USD (5 fl oz)

Invati Exfoliating Shampoo

  • No convenience of a nozzle. Kind of messy if you're trying to only use on the scalp
  • Created to cleanse the hair and scalp
  • Contains densiplex, an invigorating blend of Ayurvedic herbs, including ginseng and certified organic turmeric.
  • Multiple sizes: $11 USD (travel), $30 (6.7 fl oz), $133 (1 liter)

My Wash Routine

  1. Apply Pramāsana Purifying Scalp Cleanser only to my scalp using the nozzle. Massage with fingertips and rinse.
  2. Follow with Camille Rose Sweet Ginger Cleansing Rinse on the strands by section and rinse.
  3. Condition with Camille Rose Moroccan Pear Conditioning Custard for 5 minutes OR deep condition with Algae Renew Deep Conditioner for 20 minutes and rinse.
  4. Apply Pramasana Protective Scalp Concentrate directly to the scalp and massage with fingertips.
  5. Style as usual.

The Protective Scalp Concentrate ($45 USD) is the second and final step in the Pramasana Collection. Usually, I would just apply one of my favorite oils to my scalp, but I really appreciate Aveda for adding this as a follow-up to the Scalp Cleanser which cleanses and exfoliates to help balance sebum levels. Like any other part of your skin that requires a routine such as the face or body, your scalp deserves a proper routine as well. Adding a product that will help balance and protect the scalp is very important. Remember: a healthy scalp helps promotes hair growth.

Frequency of Use

I would recommend using these products together for the best results because they were created to work together like most products from brands. Together, they total around $80 which is a little pricey if you're on a budget...but they do work and are excellent for sistas with natural hair.

Psst...If you ARE on a serious budget, try Cantu's new Apple Cider Vinegar products -- there's three of them in the collection and they're only like $5 each.

If you're a girl with textured hair like me, then you probably don't shampoo your hair every week, so they should last awhile. A little definitely goes a long way. Here's when and how often I recommend using these products:

  • For weekly washers (loose natural hair) -- if you're used to washing your hair weekly, then the Pramasana Collection may be used every time you wash. That's totally okay!

  • For bi-weekly washers (loose natural hair) -- I don't really prefer to cleanse weekly unless I'm packing on lots of products and really need it, so you can use this collection in between co-wash weeks, too.
  • For protective styles -- If your beautician doesn't wash your hair, use this before getting your hair done whether it's for a protective style or otherwise. Nothing worse than dirty buildup under a fresh style. You can also use this after you've taken down a protective style or during (see next) for some.
  • For braids & twists -- Sometimes things get a little itchy with braids/twists in and with select styles you can successfully wash your hair with them in. This is great for purifying the scalp easily and getting around each braid with the nozzle & dropper.

So, if you came here wondering if black girls with natural hair can use these products, then I'm here to tell you "YES, WE CAN!"

Review | Olive + M Face Polish Brighten & Smooth Exfoliating Treatment

Last year, I reviewed the Olive + M Cleansing Oil that I still often use especially to remove tough makeup and liquid matte lipsticks. After connecting with the team behind the Texas-based and sourced brand through email, I was super ecstatic when I had the chance to finally meet them in person at Indie Beauty Expo! The founder and brains behind the concept, Mariska, was nice enough to gift me their newly released Face Polish. I remember mentioning in my review that I hoped to see more products in the future...and here they are! In addition, there are two other new products in the Olive + M collection: Body Polish and Eye Serum. If you already have the original products from the line, you can easily add these to your routine!

The Ingredients

olive&m_facepolish_102.jpg

Using many of the same oils as its Cleansing, Face and Body oils, Olive + M has created a way to exfoliate with the same nourishing ingredients.

Ingredients: Oat Flour, Sodium Chloride, Olive Fruit Oil, MSM Powder, Hydrogenated Olive Butter, Castor Seed Oil, Organic Sunflower Seed Oil, Hemp Seed Oil, Olive Leaf Extract, Organic Rosehip Seed Oil, Organic Calendula Flower Extract, Red Raspberry Seed Oil, Rice Bran Extract, Rosemary Leaf Extract, Sunflower Extract, Vitamin E, Cardamom Oil, Lavender Oil, Bergamot Oil

When I used the Face Polish, my skin didn't feel stripped at all. You can also tell by the scoop from my jar that it's a pretty gentle exfoliator thanks to the oat flour (no ground almonds to make me break out -- thank God). In fact, I felt quite moisturized even before I even moved on to my third and final step with the Face Oil. I honestly don't think it would hurt to skip the Face Oil, but if you want to stir up some serious morning glow while you get your beauty sleep at night...a few drops should suffice. Don't get too heavy-handed like me!

What does it do?

The Face Polish fulfills the exfoliating need in the Olive + M skincare routine and brightens + smoothens the skin. Like the rest of the brand's products, it contains olive oil as well as other oils that benefit the skin in several ways. A light layer really does go a long way to deeply removing dirt from the pores.

From the packaging: Splash face with warm water and apply a thin layer of product to clean skin. Gently massage in a circular motion for 1 minute and remove with a warm washcloth. For best results, use 1-3 times a week and follow with Olive + M's Face Oil.

My Routine

olive&m_facepolish_100.jpg

For my routine, I wanted to use all Olive + M products to see how they would work together, so here's what I used:

Three simple steps that will thoroughly break down and clear the pores of makeup for my full-face readers. Sometimes my favorite gel cleansers don't cut it when I'm wearing a lot of makeup and I love that the Face Polish continues to break everything down even in the second step of my routine.

Interestingly, I don't have very many exfoliating skincare products...and the ones I do have aren't exactly my favorites. Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Exfoliating Treatment has definitely been a go-to, but these two products are in two different ballparks when it comes to ingredients. It really depends on what you're going for! If you want something that's effective with ALL natural ingredients, then Olive + M is an excellent option. This is also much more affordable than some of the clinical/botanical ones that I actually do like, and I'm happy to have it in my beauty arsenal!
